Looe Old Cornwall Society commemorates Beatrice Whittington
When Beatrice Whittington died in 2004 at the age of 109, she left a legacy to the Looe Old Cornwall Society. On a sunny morning, Friday 5th June, her legacy was translated into an appropriate memorial. Over 30 members and friends of Beatrice met at the St Ann’s Well on Shutta and her daughter Kate cut the ribbon of the new gate that had been purchased with her money,
Beatrice had been visited many times by our previous mayor, Lt. Col. Ron Overd at her home when her birthdays came around. Along with a message from the queen her photo and congratulations were recorded many times in the Cornish Times. Ron, unfortunately due to ill health, was unable to attend the short ceremony, however the President, John Enever stepped in and made a short appropriate speech about Beatrice. She had been a LOCS member in the latter part of her life and had supported the society with great enthusiasm. She attended the regular monthly meetings and was always to be seen on the outings that the society ran.
Her daughter, Kate, a Recorder of the society for a short time thanked all members, carers and friends present. She had been unaware of the legacy being left and felt that the new gate and plaque that she unveiled were a very appropriate momento of her Mother's life in Looe.
The party afterwards adjourned to Kelly’s for tea, coffee and excellent toasted tea cakes.
